Dong-Hyuk shares his story with the world through the book “Escape from Camp 14”. He explains how “A few prisoners are publicly executed every year. Others are beaten to death or secretly murdered by guards, who have almost complete license to abuse and rape prisoners”
Kang Chol-Hwan was imprisoned in one of the most notorious camps of all of North Korea because his grandfather was accused of treason. Kang lived in the prison camp for over 10 years, surviving off rats, earthworms, and some corn. Kang began to realize the life outside of North Korea after buying an illegal radio receiver. He eventually learned that South Korea had freedoms that he couldn’t even dream of having in North Korea. Eventually, Kang escapes across the border to China and from there, moved to South Korea. |

Kim Hyung-Deok says that even though he was a defector around 20 years ago, living a successful life in South Korea, he wants to go back because his parents and siblings still live in North Korea and he wants to be with them again. South Koreans are not allowed to have any contact with the North Koreans because it is illegal.
